Everlong has been one of my favorite jams for the last 15 years. I’ve put on saved playlists with winamp, I’ve put it on many mix CDs, and I remember seeing its music video on MTV for the first time, back when MTV still played music videos.

Now, I’ve put it on my music blog. I’ve also dug up an early 90s photo of the Foo Fighters. Enjoy.

Modest Mouse was formed in 1993 in Issaqua, Washington by Singer/Guitarist/Vocalist Isaak Brock, bassist Eric Judy, and drummer Jeremiah Green. As one can see from this picture, their lineup has doubled over the last 10+ years, as they experiment with new sounds. Most notably, Johnny Marr of The Smith joined the band in 2006.

Modest Mouse attributes its name partially to the Virginia Woolf story ‘Mark on the Wall’ which reads “I wish I could hit upon a pleasant track of thought, a track indirectly reflecting credit upon myself, for those are the pleasantest thoughts, and very frequent even in the minds of modest mouse-coloured people, who believe genuinely that they dislike to hear their own praises.”

This story is a lot more compelling than that of Motley Crue, who put those two words together because they thought it sounded cool, and who added accents on the letters because they thought it looked cool.

This jam Florida comes from their latest album We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, recorded in 2006 with their current lineup.

Everyone ready for stadium indie rock? (Cure crickets chirping) Didn’t think so. If indie rock was ever performed in front of 60K plus crowds though, Mew would be leading the charge with their dreamy, weaving melodies and harmonies. This jam, The Zookeeper’s Boy, also reads like an Indie Rock song.

Mew is the pride of Denmark, founded by four guys, Bo Madsen, Jonas Bjerre, Johan Worlert, and Silas Utke Graae Jorgensen. The latter is one person. Johan Worlert has recently left the band to spend more time with his girlfriend Pernille Rosendahl. Johan and Pernille may or may not have created a band called The Storm. The Storm had a MySpace page for one day, which was then taken down with no explanation.

Mew’s sound can be classified as progressive art rock. I think it sounds like a cross between Muse and The Midnight Juggernauts.

If I had started this blog two years ago, I would have written up their song “Lazy Eye,” but at this point, it has appeared in so many car commercials and been played on so many young professionals’ car stereos that I thought it would be best to emphasize the fact that the Silversun Pickups are not a one hit wonder.

Well Thought Out Twinkles bring the Smashing Pumpkins-esque sound as well as any of their other jams. With a female bassist, also a la the Smashing Pumpkins, the Silversun Pickups could even pass for the Pumpkins by a casual observer – if only Brian Aubert shaved his head.

Also like the Smashing Pumpkins, let’s hope that they don’t get overly involved in electronic experimentation, and start recording soundtrack music for really, really bad movies.

Random Thought: One could say that the Silversun Pickups revitalize 90s Alternative Rock similar to how The Hold Steady revitalize 70s Rock and Roll.
