The Talking Heads – And She Was
What’s there not to like about The Talking Heads. They crank out super catchy post punk jams that make us love the 80s even more, and there live sets feature horns, backup singers, and almost-overly energetic guitar and bass player, including the ageless and always-down David Byrne on lead vocals.
The Heads have since disbanded, but David Byrne is still cranking out tunes. The latest with Brian Eno, another figure of rock and roll royalty.
Play on. We all enjoy our nights even more because of it.
The Airborne Toxic Event – Sometime Around Midnight
Getting their name from the book White Noise, The Airborne Toxic Event incorporate strings and keyboards into their music, giving them a slightly unique style of post punk. They sound to me like a more relaxed version of the Hold Steady.
They got some good lyrics too. Their singer and lead guitar player, Mikel Jollett, was a one-time novelist.
Random thought, does the guy in the back left look like Russell Brand to anyone else?
Second random thought, these guys are bringing back sideways bangs.
Michael Franti – I Know I’m Not Alone
All hail the Bay Area’s favorite dreadlocked, anti-war, singer-songwriter.
Michael Franti has been releasing discs for the last 10 years. He speaks to political issues in all of his songs, and as of late, he has been extremely outspoken about the Iraq War. He traveled there in 2006, filming a documentary in the process, and he headlines ‘Power to the Peaceful’ for the last couple of years, a free show in San Francisco that harbors peaceful thought and activism.
I like the video for this jam too:
Marco Benevento – Atari
Marco Benevento is one hip dude. He graduated from Berkley school of music in 1999 and has since been playing all kinds of major music festivals with his band The Benevento/Russo Duo, which includes drummer Joe Russo.
Marco first started playing piano at age 7, then started honing is experimentation and interpretation skills in high school, playing for the jazz band and other personal projects.
He uses all kinds of effects, but don’t let these take away from his catchy keyboard riffs. He uses a Casio Sampling Keyboard and a Myriad Effects Pedals, both accenting his musicianship on a Hammond Organ and Wurlitzer Electric Piano.
Lykke Li – Little Bit
A light happy tune that will keep you in a good mood. Try following this jam up with Royksopp – What Else Is There, a song cast in a similar mold.
Lykke Li was born Li Lykke Timotej Zachrisson in Sweden, but apparently her full name was too hard to remember, so she shortened it to create her stage name.
Her original sound would make you think that she’s been around a while, but she’s only 22.
Props.
Foo Fighters – Everlong
Every once and a while, I’m going to post a jam that I not only grew up listening to, but that also escaped overexposure from mainstream radio in the mid 90s.
Everlong has been one of my favorite jams for the last 15 years. I’ve put on saved playlists with winamp, I’ve put it on many mix CDs, and I remember seeing its music video on MTV for the first time, back when MTV still played music videos.
Now, I’ve put it on my music blog. I’ve also dug up an early 90s photo of the Foo Fighters. Enjoy.
Fleet Foxes – White Winter Hymnal
Fleet Foxes are another indie pop band from Seattle. Though I can’t shake the comparisons to Band of Horses, I will say that I like this jam more than any of the Band of Horses tunes.
ThreeImaginaryGirls puts it best:
” Their delightful, pop-styled songs sounded tight but not rigid and got the crowd swaying along straightaway. With bell-toned guitars, bright keyboards, and a dash of shimmer round the edges, Fleet Foxes craft deliciously melody-driven songs that are intensely charming. ”
I’d say that this song is charming slash powerful, and not the other way around.
