Love this jam. Love this band. As I start listening to more and more remixes of post-punk jams, rather than the songs themselves, its good to find original tracks that I can listen to over and over again.
Based in New York, founding members of We Are Scientists met while attending Harvey Mudd College and Pamona College. They have toured with Arctic Monkeys and Maximo Park, two UK-based rock band heavyweights.
Before doing a quick wikipedia lookup of these guys, I thought they were from the UK also. Nope, just got that sound…
I originally found out about M83 through TheSixtyOne. I confess, I’ve been spending more time on this site then on the 10 or so other music blogs that I regularly browse, but I’ll probably get back to most of these blogs in the next week or two.
M83 is one of those bands that do particularly well in the independent music discovery engines. They cross a variety of styles, and appeal to music fans of most of these styles, including indie rock, electro, new wave, and experimental. They remind me of the band Mew quite a big, especially their song The Zookeeper’s Boy.
Happy, brisk, light, effortless - The Coral’s In the Morning drops like fresh snow on a sunny powder day in Tahoe. Grab a cup of Joe, put this track on, then get ready to get your ski on.
Or, if this song isn’t your style, crank a little Black Tide Shockwave. That should get the juices flowing.
Back to The Coral, they have released five albums to date, and were formed in 1996 near Liverpool. They definitely have the psychedelic pop thing going on.
Hot Chip is an electropop band from the London area. Founding members Alexis Taylor and Joe Goddard started the band in 2000, originally composing songs on acoustic guitar, but soon started experimenting with a more electronic sound, true to the band’s style today.
their first full album was released in 2003, and they are close to releasing their fourth full length album.
Their song ‘Over and Over’ is particularly well known, but ‘And I Was a Boy from School’ is my personal favorite. Listen above.
Common Market is a Seattle based hip hop group. Its comprised of MC RA Scion and DJ/Producer Sabzi. Sabzi gained some notoriety with his previous and current group Blue Scholars (more of that coming on this blog soon). Both Scion and Sabzi began recording tracks in 2002, but they formed Common Market in 2005.
This track comes off the album Tobacco Road, which they then stated on a Seattle radio station was going to be released on ‘Your Mom’s 50th Birthday’
I can’t help myself as I listen to The Rosebuds. With a drum line that reminds me of Autolux, I simply have to rock the head nod. Yes, of course, it’s feel good. Can you blame me? Take the chorus of “Shake our tree” — ‘Are you ever gonna treat me right?…’ This is the kind of jam you’ll rock on the bus while tuning out the entire damned thing. Actually, take this to work with ya…
Originally from Raleigh, the couple has been producing since May 2001.
They’ll even do a remix or two. More of that coming.
Here comes the self-proclaimed best fan video ever. Not sure if this is the official video for the Girl Talk song Bounce That, but not much about the ‘band’ Girl Talk is very official. He’ll drop about 10 different songs in a single track, none of them his to begin with. Its DJs like this that make the music industry cringe, then start suing developers…
Girl Talk is one man - Gregg Gillis. He started recording these mashups while studying biomedical engineering, with a focus on tissue engineering. He’s now selling out shows at some of the top venues in the country.
Girl Talk has also been front and center in the new movement of giving away music. Considering that he didn’t create any of it from scratch, he probably isn’t as attached to it as, say, Metallica.
Young Love, a New York City alt dance band, will get you up and at ‘em in no time.
Dan Keyes is the main man behind the project, singing lead vocals, and handling most of the music production. He formerly fronted a post-hardcore band based out of Austin called Recover.
Young Love is a quite a departure…
This song was also featured in the 2007 Fifa Soccer soundtrack.
Rumours is spelled with a ‘u’ for this track. Depeche Mode is from Essex, England after all.
Current members of Depeche Mode first started playing music together in 1977, but didn’t start adding their trademark synthesizer licks on a record until 1980. They were then approached by a music exec in 1981 after hearing the single ‘Dreaming of Me.’ Depeche Mode released ‘Just Can’t Get Enough’ three months later, and they have been releasing hit singles ever since.
Blasephemous Rumours comes from their 1989 release ‘101.’
Its hard to pick my favorite Depeche Mode album. I like the more up tempo stuff from the 80s and early 90s, but Ultra has been one of my favorite albums for some time now. One of the most relaxing records I’ve ever listen to.

School of Seven Balls, er Bells, is an experimental indie pop band, comprised of twin sisters Alejandra and Claudia Deheza. They drop all kind of vocal harmonies, while instrumentalist Benjamin Curtis creates some truly unique noise pop backgrounds.
They’re named after the possibly-mythical South American pickpocket training academy. Not sure what each bell refers to. If anyone knows, feel free to enlighten us in the comments below.
Random thought - I bet if we turned off the lights, we’d be like ‘where’d they go?!?’
