How Technics DJ Turntables Work
Technics turntables spin the wheel of the platter by using a direct drive mechanism.
The Technics SL-1200 MK2 has been one of the most widely used turntables among DJs since its conception in 1972. Originally released as a high fidelity consumer record player, it quickly became adopted among radio and club disc jockeys.
Then, in 1978, the SL-1200MK2 was released, and has since become one of the most common turntable for DJing and scratching. Among many improvement over hte SL-1200 the MK2 had the biggest improvement in the motor and casing.
The direct drive mechanism is at the bottom of the Technics turntables, which is then attached directly to the platter above it, by way of a motor that spins the platter.
Alternatively, the belt drive DJ turntable uses a two-part mechanism, involving both a motor and a pulley.
The connection between the direct drive mechanism and the platter offers just enough torque for any record to play instantly and at a constant speed without drag. The connection is designed to optimize the system of gears and magnetism between the two bodies.
Instant torque creates more control for the DJ
